Norman Appleby, 81, of Coggon, formerly of Manchester, Ryan and Buck Creek, died Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood following complications of Alzheimers.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2007 at the Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon by Rev. Kurt D. Walker. Family will greet friends from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and one hour before services Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Coggon Cemetery, Coggon.
Norman was born December 17, 1925 near Hopkinton, the son of Cortland H. and Alice J. (Green) Appleby. He attended country school by Golden Prairie and graduated from Buck Creek High School in 1943. He farmed with his family and helped other area farmers. On September 5, 1948, Norman was united in marriage to Barbara Doese at the Golden Prairie Congregational Church in rural Ryan. The couple farmed in the Manchester, Golden Prairie and Buck Creek areas. In 1964, they moved to the Coggon area where they retired in 1990. Norman continued to help out on the farm.
Norman was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon, Farm Bureau, and the Delaware County Dairy Association and Pork Producers. Farming was his life. Norman and Barbara enjoyed square dancing and playing cards, especially 500, and traveling after retirement. Norman took pleasure in watching his grandchildren?s sporting events.
Norman is survived by his wife, Barbara Appleby of Coggon; four children, Betty (Tom) South of Des Moines, Dick (Linda) Appleby of Marion, Steven (Beth) Appleby of Grand Cayman and Margie (Mick) Ellis of Coggon; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Cortland & Alice Appleby; a grandson, Shane C. Martin; sisters, Lois Travers and Mildred Milroy; a brother, Lyle Appleby; and infant twin siblings, Leland and Lorraine Appleby.
