Norma E. Lewis, 93, of Central City, died Friday, October 10, 2008, at Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Central City United Methodist Church, Central City, by Rev. Nick Needham. The family will greet friends from 4 - 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Central City, Iowa.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Robert A.(Charlotte) Lewis and John M. (Elise) Lewis both of Metairie, Louisiana, and Gene W. (Sherry) Lewis of Blairstown; a daughter, Janet Ruth (Dr. Frederick) Riggins of Woodbury, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren, Sarah, Michelle, Nathan, Eric, Amy, Josh, Mark, and Larry Lewis and Paul, Mark, and Amy Riggins, and Patrick (Karen) Rhodes and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; 3 brothers, George, Charles and Harold; 3 sisters, Esther, Ruth, and Edith; and a grandson, Todd Lewis.
Norma was born September 29, 1915, the daughter of Orville “O.C.” Charles and Pearl Nellie (Traver) Brewer, in rural Central City, Iowa. She married Merton Chandle Lewis on June 11, 1937 in Central City. He died January 10, 1975. Norma was a cook at Central City Community Schools from 1959 ?" 1985. She later volunteered at the school, for over 10 years, reading to the children. Norma was an active lifelong member of the Central City United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Elderberries. She loved attending “The Burnt Toast Club” and especially enjoyed traveling to see her family and friends. She will always be remembered as a compassionate and loyal person who was always giving of herself by serving others.
A memorial fund has been established in Norma’s memory.
