Judge Nicholas E. Lillios, 78, of 3055 Holiday Court, Bettendorf, Iowa, a former longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Genesis East Hospital in Davenport, following a brief illness. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m.Tuesday, May 13, 2003, Greek Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Basil Hickman, Rev. Joseph Strezlecki, and Rev. Emmanuel Lillios. Trisagion service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, where friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with Military rites.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Evangeline (Von); their five children and their spouses: Dr. Anna Lillios (Dr. George Everett) of Orlando, FL, Rev. Emmanuel Lillios (Theresa) of Bettendorf, IA, Nicolette Diamantis (Dr. Steve) of Omaha, NE., Judge Paul Lillios (Mary) of Northbrook, IL., and Mariellen Crosson (Brad) of Bettendorf, IA.; 14 grandchildren, Christopher and Andrew Everett; Nicholas, Elizabeth, and Amalia Lillios; Stephanie, Christina, Melissa, and John Diamantis; Nicholas, Barbie, and Constantine Lillios; Katie, and Lia Crosson.
Judge Lillios was born July 20, 1924, in Sioux City, IA to Anna (Klassis) and Emmanuel Lillios. Upon graduation from high school, he attended the University of Iowa. After one semester, he was inducted into the US Army. He served with the 10th Armored Division in Europe during World War II where he saw action in a number of campaigns including the Battle of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. After his service in the Army, he married Evangeline Cavros at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist, on June 22, 1947. He resumed attendance at the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree in 1948. He then graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1950, with a Juris Doctor degree.
Judge Lillios was an attorney in private practice in Cedar Rapids for 39 years. During the 1960?s, he was an Assistant Cedar Rapids City Attorney. In addition, he was past director of the Linn County Legal Aid Society during the 1970?s. He was appointed a Magistrate Judge for the Iowa District Court in Cedar Rapids, serving from 1981 until his retirement in May, 1989.
Judge Lillios was Chairman of the Linn County Democratic Party from 1960 until 1965. He also served various civic and fraternal organizations including service as Secretary of the Veterans Memorial Commission, District Governor of the Order of Ahepa, Secretary of the Linn County Bar Association, Director of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cedar Rapids, Judge Advocate of the Iowa VFW, and Vice-Commander of Hanford Post of the American Legion. He was also a past member of the Iowa State Bar Association, Elks Club, Lions Club, Masons, Eagles, High Twelve, American Legion, Waltonians, YMCA, Toastmasters, Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity.
Judge Lillios served several times as president and as a member of the parish council of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist. He was especially proud of helping to found a free meal ministry at the church. It is now known as the Soup Kitchen at Green Square.
Judge Lillios was preceded in death by his parents.
Judge Lillios valued his religion, his family and a good round of bridge or golf above all else. Although his children and grandchildren, to whom he was devoted, will always miss his presence in their lives, he left them a legacy of decency, honesty and the desire to help those less fortunate.
