Neva Louise Mercer, 87, of Exira, Iowa, formerly of Springville, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at the Exira Care Center. Services: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Richard, of Exira; her daughter, Joan (David) Schrampfer of Exira; her grandchildren, Denise (Lonn) Kilworth of Exira, and Debra Schrampfer of Omaha; her great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, and Christopher Kilworth of Exira; her sisters, Irma Stambaugh of Springville and Eleanor (Dick) Taylor of Iowa City; her brother, Lester (Virginia) Maier of Alburnett; her brother-in-law, Robert (Opal) Mercer of Washington; her sisters-in-law, Mary Jo (Kenny) Smith of Marion and Shirley Mercer of Marion; and her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Neva was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jon Richard Mercer; and her brothers-in-law, Dale Stambaugh and James Mercer.
Neva was born on September 17, 1919, in Alburnett, Iowa to Carl and Mabel (Bachman) Maier. She graduated from Alburnett High School on May 13, 1937. Neva entered the Paris Academy of Beauty Culture Cosmetology School on July 26, 1937 and graduated on March 16, 1938. She spent the spring and summer of 1937 helping beauty operators in Sigourney and Washington. In October of 1938, Neva opened her own beauty shop in Springville. On June 27, 1942, she married Richard C. Mercer at St. Paul?s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. Neva quit working to take care of her children after they were born, and started back to work reopening her beauty shop in 1958. She retired in 1982.
Neva was a member of Springville Presbyterian Church in Springville. She loved her church family, and had been a member of the Presbyterian Women?s Ruth Circle Group and had served as a Deaconess for several years.
Neva enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all of her relatives, and her friends. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, and traveling with her husband.
