Nellie E. Carradus, 101, of Manchester, died Friday morning, December 30, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, after a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester with Pastor Jill Mack officiating. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Monday and an hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Nellie was born on August 1, 1904 at Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of John O. and Margaret J. (Scanlon) Johnston. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1924 and worked for area families. On February 26, 1931 Nellie was united in marriage to James W. Carradus in Manchester. The couple farmed and were members of the Manchester United Methodist Church. James passed away on March 11, 1986.
Nellie is a member of the Hannah Circle of the Manchester United Methodist Church, Lend-a-Hand Club and a 60-year member of the Masonville Grange. Nellie enjoyed her life on the farm and being outdoors tending to her flower gardens. She loved to bake cookies for her family. She also enjoyed square-dancing, playing cards, reading, crocheting and watching television, especially Lawrence Welk.
Nellie is survived by her son-in-law, Denny Culbertson of Delaware, IA; three granddaughters and their husbands, Luann & Rand McLeod of Ayr, ND, Cyndi & John Stoklasa of Manchester, Denise & Jody Antrim of Manchester; four great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma M. Kehrli of Edgewood.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, John O. & Margaret J. Johnston; her husband James Carradus; her daughter, Margaret Culbertson; four sisters, Maude W. Airhart, Ethel M. Wall, Ruth E. Cole and Ida F. McDowell; and a brother, Burl R. Johnston.
