Nelle was born July 30, 1923, in Harkin, North Carolina, to James and Elon (Price) Cogdill. She spent much of her childhood in Tennessee before her family moved to Iowa. On April 6, 1946, Nelle married James Savage in Coggon. Though she spent the last few years at Heritage Nursing Home, she resided in Coggon and Central City most of her life.
Nelle worked for 34 years in the grocery industry and retired from Nash-Finch in 1986. She always lent a helping hand to her friends and family in times of need. Nelle was frequently found with a cup of coffee in her hand and the cooking channel playing on her TV. She thoroughly enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with her daughter and sisters.
Nelle is survived by her daughter, Donna (John) Niebuhr of Blairstown; three grandchildren, Kristine (Michael) Rummel of Cedar Rapids, Joseph Niebuhr of Cedar Rapids, and Janelle Niebuhr of Kansas City, MO; three great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Paige, and Noah Rummel of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Dee Wasia Orr of Manchester, Tossie Husmann of Marion, and Ostia Shelton of Central City; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Paris and Bill Cogdill; and two sisters, Eunice Raines and Betty Jane Cogdill who passed away in infancy.
