Milton “Mick” Starcevich, 93, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the Meth Wick Community, Cedar Rapids. Graveside services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2015, at the Highland Cemetery, Mystic, Iowa, by Father Bill Hubmann, with military honors. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Mick (Linda) Starcevich of Cedar Rapids and Mary (Lee Jackson) Grabowski of West Dundee, Illinois; grandchildren, Matt (Kali Schoon), Marlo (Jason) Kerr and Megan (Nick) Zabikow; great-grandchildren, Colby Starcevich, Chase and Connor Kerr, Brooklyn and Kaelyn Zabikow;
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anne; and granddaughter, Michelle Starcevich.
Mick was born November 24, 1921, the son of Matthew and Mary Starcevich, in Centerville, Iowa. He attended Coe College from 1939 to 1943 and received his Master’s degree from the University of Iowa. Mick served his country with the United States Marine Corps from 1943 to 1947, during World War II, where he received three bronze stars and two purple hearts. On January 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to Anne Patricia Vinton in Masonville, Iowa.
After returning from the service, Mick began his teaching and coaching career at Postville High School until 1953 and then with the Cedar Falls School District for 30 years. He received many coaching awards including the Iowa Football Coaches Association Don Taft Junior High Memorial Award, Junior High Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Hall of Fame with the Iowa High School Athletic Director Association. Along with his teaching and coaching duties, Mick also loved farming. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Memorials may be directed to Kirkwood Community College Scholarship for Veterans in memory of Mick.
