Mildred Alicia Smith, 91, a resident of Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at the care center, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2004, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Prairieburg by Rev. Wayne Droessler. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg.
Survivors include her children, David F. Smith of Burnside, Kentucky and Diane M. O?Donnell of Cameron, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Brian Smith, Michael O?Donnell, Angela McClain and Jennifer Waggoner; and nine great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters, Edith Holub, Winifred Henderson and Lois (Marvin) Ellwood; and a brother, Howard (Lillian) Burnside.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mildred was born May 24, 1912, the daughter of Wallace and Minnie (Smith) Burnside in rural Central City. On August 3, 1937, she married Frank Joseph Smith in Coggon. He died February 6, 1957. Mildred graduated from Central City High School and then earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at Upper Iowa University. She was an elementary school teacher for thirty-seven years before retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, St. Joseph?s Catholic Church and the Piece Makers Sewing Club. She enjoyed painting and writing poetry.
