Mildred M. Nieman, 91, of Earlville, died Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a short illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 28, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville by Rev. Roger McKinstry. Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville and one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.

Mildred was born February 16, 1916, in Almoral, the daughter of Charles and Effie (Bishop) Carpenter. She attended school in Almoral and graduated from Earlville High School in 1934. Mildred then attended business college in Cedar Rapids and worked as a waitress. On March 28, 1940 Mildred was united in marriage to August J. W. Nieman at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. The couple farmed for 36 years and raised their children southeast of Earlville. In 1976 they moved to Earlville. August died December 8, 2001. Mildred moved to the Good Neighbor Home in September of 2005.

Mildred was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville where she belonged to the Women’s Group and was active in Bible studies. She served as an officer of the ALCW Conference and made mission quilts for many years. She served on the county 4-H Advisory Committee. Mildred was a founding officer and board member of the Good Neighbor Home Auxiliary.

Mildred is survived by her children, Ilomae (Duane) Meling of Cylinder, Donna Joslin (Duayne Mere) of Morley, Edward (Gayle) Nieman of Bricelyn, MN, David (Yoly) Nieman of Edgewood, Richard (Christy) Nieman and Duane (Karen) Nieman, both of Earlville; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Blanche Richter of Earlville.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Charles & Effie Carpenter; her husband, August Nieman; three sisters, Florence Wathen, Marian Maurer and Lillian Kennedy; and a brother-in-law, Ray Richter.
