Mildred B. Fairchild, 91, of 2440 22nd Ave., Marion, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital, from complications of a stroke. Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Rev. Del Bear. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the funeral home. Graveside Services: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Westview Cemetery in Kirkville, Iowa.
Survivors include 3 sons, Gerald (Betty) Fairchild of Marion, Dale (Murial) Fairchild of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ray (Diana) Fairchild of Shellsburg; 5 daughters, Janice (Don) Courtney of Ottumwa, Joanne (Jim) Stivers of Ottumwa, Betty Jean (Dave) Rogers of Robins, Janie Fairchild of Marion, and Nancy Mahanger of Pickering, Ontario Canada; one son-in-law, Sam Nelson of Bonaparte, Iowa; one sister-in-law Ruth Dawson of Ottumwa; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is her faithful dog, Zeus.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; one daughter, Mary; 3 brothers, John, Ray, and George; 2 sisters, Elizabeth & Ethyl; 2 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson.
Mildred was born October 14, 1916, the daughter of John and Emma (Harris) Dawson, in Center Township, Iowa. She graduated as the Valedictorian from Kirkville High School in 1934 where she was very active with the basketball team. Mildred married Don V. Fairchild on October 29, 1936 in Ottumwa. He died February 21, 2005. The couple farmed for many years in Davis County. They then moved to Marion in 1963. Mildred was a pie baker at Bishop’s Cafeteria before going to Collins Radio until her retirement. She then volunteered for the St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary, accumulating 20,000 hours. Mildred loved the outdoors, especially feeding the squirrels and birds.
