Michael was born September 27, 1938, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of L.W. and Shirley (Hainline) Montgomery. On September 24, 1960, he was united in marriage to Verlene Kruse in Central City. Michael was raised in Afton, Iowa, and moved to the Cedar Rapids area in 1955. He has lived in Center Point since 1966. He was a truck driver for Jensen Transport for 4 years, Vitalis Trucking for 18 years, and most recently for Wynne Transport for 15 years until his retirement in January of 2004.
Michael was born with a curious mind that he filled with an astounding array of knowledge and facts about topics both practical and arcane. His interests were too broad and diverse to list, but tops among them were bird watching and other aspects of nature and wildlife, woodworking, collecting and shooting guns, and collecting books on dozens of topics. Those who knew Michael were continually impressed by his wealth of knowledge which was balanced by a quick wit and a sense of humor that found the amusing and ridiculous in life and in himself.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Teamsters Union. He was also the past president of the Center Point Lions Club.
