Mervin L. “Merv” Cronbaugh, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Bill Warhover of Echo Hill Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 15, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Ginny); his sons, Chris (Eryn) Cronbaugh and David (Sheila) Cronbaugh, both of Cedar Rapids; a special grandson, Noah Cronbaugh; his mother, Lauretta Cronbaugh of Belle Plaine; a brother, Lowell (Nelda) Cronbaugh of Belle Plaine; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis.

Merv was born in Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Louis and Lauretta (England) Cronbaugh, on September 12, 1936. He received his BA Degree from Simpson College, his Masters from Western Illinois College and his Advance Study in Education from the University of Illinois. On August 24, 1958, Merv was united in marriage to Virginia (Ginny) Melsha in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For 34 years, he worked for the Cedar Rapids School District of which 31 years were at Kennedy High School as a guidance counselor, retiring in 1998.

For 21 years, Merv served on the Kirkwood Board of Trustees where he currently was serving as Vice Chair. He was a recipient of the John P. Kibbie Award (for Iowa Community College Leader for outstanding service in the state’s two-year college mission) in 2008 and chair of the Enterprise Zone Committee.

Memorials may be made to the Kirkwood Foundation Fund or to Hospice of Mercy in memory of Merv.
