Merrill Melvin Strand, 59, of Toddville, died Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at New Covenant Bible Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Tye Male. The family will greet friends 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett with military honors provided by American Legion Post # 675 of Toddville.
Survivors include his wife, Sara; children, Codi Strand of CA, Jessica (Rob) Taylor of Alburnett, Matt (Tasha) Strand of Cedar Rapids, Afton (Chad) LeFevere of Shellsburg, and Dustin Strand of Alburnett; his mother, Vivian Strand of Toddville; 11 grandchildren, Devon, Preston, Reese, Asher, Isabella, Evan, Paxton, Payton, Ainsley, Paige, and Naomi; and siblings, Ron (Katy) Strand of TN, Dale (Patsy) Strand of Toddville, Valerie (Dave) Morris of KS, and Jody (Janice) Strand of Toddville. Also surviving are more than 40 nieces and nephews.
Merrill was born April 20, 1952 in Morris, MN, the son of Edisteen and Vivian (Stark) Strand. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1970, and received his AA in Accounting from Kirkwood Community College in 1973. Merrill was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam War. He married Sara D. Fishell on April 9, 1977 in Toddville. Merrill worked as an account manager for more than 40 years for Mid-Continent Bottlers.
Merrill lived his life for God, his wife, his kids, and his grandkids; God and family are all that mattered, everything else is secondary. Merrill will be remembered as a warm and loving, kind-hearted, hard-working man, who put others needs ahead of his own.
