Merrill J. Flitsch, 89, of 335 Daws Road, Hiawatha, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Banner Gardens Hospice House in Mesa, Arizona, following a sudden illness. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by the Rev. Diane Mitchell. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Monday.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Hiawatha; a son, Marc (Mary Jo) Flitsch, a granddaughter, Anna (Rod) Adams, two great-grandchildren, Austin Bird and Jaci Jo Adams, all of Davenport; his sister, Leila Sloan of Alburnett; a brother-in-law, Harold McGowan of Cedar Rapids; an uncle, Dean Lyon of Hiawatha; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Merrill was born in rural Linn County near Alburnett, Iowa, on July 27, 1917, the son of Jacob H. and Lera Lyon Flitsch. He graduated from Alburnett High School and attended ISU at Ames. On July 20, 1942, he married Marjorie Louise McGowan in Alburnett.
While living in Cedar Rapids, Merrill was employed by Colonial Bakery and John Hancock Insurance Company. He then farmed near Troy Mills and then Walker. Merrill retired from the farm in 1977, moved to Hiawatha and worked at Tractor Supply Company in Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau and was a 4-H leader at Troy Mills. He was a member and past president of the Walker Lions Club, a member of ABC, the Iowa Black Angus Association and Walker Methodist Church. He bowled at Walker Lanes.
