Merlin "Buck? Bean, 71, of Traer, Iowa, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Sunrise Hill Nursing Home, Traer, following a short illness. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at St. Peter?s Catholic Church, Mendota, Minnesota, where friends may call from 9:15 to service time at the church. Father Kevin Clinton will officiate. Burial: St. Peter?s Catholic Cemetery, Mendota, Minnesota.
Survivors include his wife, Lois (LeMay) Bean; his children, Jay Bean of Traer, Kerwin Bean of North St. Paul, Minnesota, Kevin Bean of Stillwater, Minnesota, Merlin Bean of Egan, Minnesota and Karlan Bean of St. Paul, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Sandra Wells and Judy Fare, both of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Elmeda Bean; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters in infancy; and two brothers, Harlan and Herman.
Merlin was born July 29, 1931, the son of Jay and Lura (Long) Bean, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He owned and operated several service stations and also was a licensed real estate broker and licensed locksmith. Merlin raced for NASCAR and then followed the race tour in his later years. He also raised and raced quarter horses for several years. Merlin was a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association.
