Merle A. Fear, 90, a resident of the Monticello Nursing & Rehab Center, died there Saturday, December 20, 2003, after a brief illness. The family will greet friends from 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Graveside services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at Hopkinton Cemetery, by the Rev. Del Bear.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Eve M. Elliot of Marion, Roy D. Fear of Central City, Herbert H. Fear of Cedar Rapids and Emma (Earl) Reid of Urbana and Yuma, Arizona; and his nieces and nephews, Lila (Lee) Opitz of Aurora, Bret Fear of Dubuque, Dennis (Kay) Fear of Monticello, Nancy (Jerry) Trowbridge of Durango, and Roger E. (Sharon) Reid of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; two brothers, Wayne and John; and a sister, Elsie Fear.

Merle was born the son of John F. and Verna (Meister) Fear on December 23, 1912, in Hopkinton. He was a tool and dye maker and a self-employed builder for many years. During World War II, Merle was drafted into working for the "War Hemp Industries? of Chicago.
