Melvin A. Voelker, 89, of 221 23rd Street N.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from pneumonia. Services: 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Robert Pleiness. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood.
Survivors include his wife, Artelle; daughters, Diane Kay Wilcox of Sunrise Beach, Missouri and Dawn J. Uelze of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Billy Uelze of Atlanta, Georgia, Shannon Webber of Deep River, Iowa, Nikki Davis of Atlanta, Georgia, Sean Wilcox of Oscaloosa and Shayne Wilcox of Montezuma; four great grandchildren, Brittany Webber and Penton Webber both of Deep River, Taylor Wilcox of Montezuma and Brooke Davis of Atlanta, Georgia; sister, Dorothy Heeren of Mt. Vernon; brother-in-law, Earl Heeren; sister-in-law, Evelyn Voelker of Stanwood; and brother-in-law, Berdell Maley of Ft. Madison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Francis Voelker; and two brothers, Casper Voelker and Harlan Voelker.
Melvin was born September 29, 1918, in Olin, Iowa, the son of Henry and Gertrude (Clingman) Voelker. On May 24, 1941, in Kohoka, Missouri, Melvin was united in marriage to Artelle Maley. He worked for Montgomery Wards and Sears and then as a custodian for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools for 24 years.
Melvin was a member of the Cedar Christian Church and the Service Employees International Local #55. He loved to travel and enjoyed his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
