Melvin Carl Thompson, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Palo, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Celebrant Diane Thovson. Service will follow the visitation. Graveside Service with military rites, Circle Grove Cemetery, Troy Mills.
Survivors include his children, Gary (Kris) Thompson of Cedar Rapids and Dennis (Ann) Thompson of Atkins, Iowa; sister, Carol (Ralph) Jones of Independence, Iowa; brother, Marvin Thompson of Independence; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Edward Nielson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Maurine Nielsen: and brother, Le Rain Thompson.
Melvin was born on October 14, 1931, in rural Walker, Iowa, son of Carl A. and Marguerite D. (Carsoner) Thompson. He graduated from Troy Mills Consolidated School in 1950. Melvin served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean Conflict. After high school graduation, he worked for Wilson Foods. Melvin worked for Linn Co-op for 36 years and then for Thompson’s Truck & Trailer for 15 years. He enjoyed carpentry and tinkering with trucks or with anything mechanical.
