Melvin R. Mensen, 83, of Earlville, Iowa, died Thursday, November 23, 2006 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, after a long illness.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 27, 2006, at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville, with a 4:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Friends may also call after 9:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
Melvin was born October 18, 1923 in Petersburg, the son of John A. and Anna M. (Lammers) Mensen. He moved to North Washington at the age of nine. Melvin moved to Greeley in 1942, and worked as a farmhand. In 1943, Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Bladen during World War II. On November 19, 1946 Melvin was united in marriage to Agnes L. Mormann at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. The couple farmed in Delaware County before settling on a farm near Earlville. In 1974, they moved into Earlville where Melvin worked for Henderson, Bradco, and Eno Sand & Gravel.
Melvin is a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church and the Carpenter-Diesch-White American Legion Post #436, both in Earlville. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially watching his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed dancing, fishing and playing Yahtzee.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Agnes Mensen of Earlville; four children, Linda (Jim) Kerper of Greeley, Lyle (Linda) Mensen of Earlville, Steve (Cindy) Mensen of Manchester and Mike (Sandy) Mensen of Delhi; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Jean Mensen of Dyersville, Catherine Mormann of Earlville, Abbie Mormann of Colesburg and Jean Mormann of Dyersville.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, John & Anna Mensen; five brothers, Vincent, Linus "Lee?, Victor, Lester in infancy and Walter; and two sisters, Henrietta Wegmann and Mildred Roethler.
