Melissa Ann Brendes, 20, of 159 Meghann Drive, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, as a result of a car accident. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 22, 2007, at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. Leon Hauser. Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.

Survivors include her parents, Galen and Sherry Brendes of Marion; her maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Mildred Soenksen of Marion; her paternal grandmother, Jeannette Brendes of Clarence; aunts, uncles, and cousins, including Larry (Mary) Soenksen of Marion, Jim (Jan) Brendes of Martelle, Bob (Lori) Brendes of Cedar Rapids, and Barb (Bob) Young of Cedar Rapids; and her special friend, Will Marchino, a student at the University of Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Ralph Brendes; and her great-grandparents.

Melissa was born March 20, 1987, the daughter of Galen and Sherry (Soenksen) Brendes in Rockford, Illinois. She graduated from Linn-Mar High School in 2005 and attended the University of Iowa, majoring in English/Communications and minoring in Dance. Melissa was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church, a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, and was active with the Linn-Mar Poms in high school.

Dance was a major part of Melissa’s life and it was her passion since the age of four. She loved children and had a special rapport with kids she came into contact with. Melissa was a very special young lady who seemed to be everyone’s friend. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial fund has been established in Melissa’s memory.
