May E. Evans, 99, of Bickford Cottage, formerly of Central City, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Services to be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, by Rev. Jonna Jensen. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Burial: Friends Cemetery in Whittier, Iowa.
Survivors include her son, Richard Moore of Marion; 5 step-grandchildren and 15 step-great-grandchildren and many, many step-great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Pearl Samuelson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; eight brothers and 2 sisters.
May was born on March 23, 1908, the daughter of Hiriam E. and Julia (Campbell) Davis in rural Central City, Iowa. She graduated from Central City High School in 1926. She attended Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for one year. She married Harold Moore; they later divorced. She then married J.W. Moore who preceded her in death and she later married Alex C. Evans in 1976. She was a member of the American Legion Aux. Wapsi Post #421, holding many positions for 69 years, including such positions as president, secretary, treasurer and historian of this unit. She also served as County President of American Legion Auxilary and as Chaplin of Linn County Auxilary . She also belonged to Rebecca, serving as warden of the Rebecca Lodge in Fairfield. She served as Vice Grand and noble grand of Rebecca Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in May’s name to benefit the Congregate Meals at the Falcon Center in Central City.
May truly enjoyed helping and serving others.
She was known and loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.
