Maxine E. Stein, 89, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Newhall, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017, at Hallmar Residential Care of Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, where a Rosary will begin at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion conducted by Father David O’Connor. Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Maxine is survived by her children, Greg (Kathleen) Stein of Chandler, Arizona, Larry (Nancy) Stein of Robins, Kay (Mark) McMann of Williamsburg, Cindy (Dale) Dugenske of Cedar Rapids, Joe (Andrea) Stein of Naperville, Illinois, and Janice (Steve) Kelly of Marion; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Francis “Marshall” (Betty) Mangold of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne Stein; two sisters; and four brothers.
Maxine was born November 25, 1927, in Ryan, Iowa, one of eight children to Raymond and Blanche (McEnany) Mangold. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic High School in Ryan and Iowa State Teacher’s College. On August 22, 1949, she was united in marriage to Wayne A. Stein in Ryan. Maxine was a teacher in the Newhall Public School before beginning her family. While her children were growing up she enjoyed being a Cub Scout den mother. Maxine then was a substitute teacher, before starting her career at the United States Postal Service in Cedar Rapids. She worked in Cedar Rapids for ten years before becoming the Postmaster in Newhall for ten years.
Maxine was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary in Newhall for many years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with family including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
