Max Verl Anderson, 92, of Delhi, Iowa, passed away from sudden cardiac arrest at his winter home in Florida on Monday, December 5, 2022. Max was born July 7, 1930 in Alburnett, Iowa, to William James “Bill” and Bernice Elta (Langguth) Anderson. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1948, earned his BA degree in Education from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1952 and later earned his MA degree from the University of Iowa.
Max was united in marriage with Vonda Lee Cook on November 23, 1950 at the First Christian Church in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on November 22, 2022 after 72 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Tim (Deb) Anderson of Albia, Iowa, Teri Tyler of Kingsland, Georgia, and Mark (Kerry) Anderson of Eldridge, Iowa.
He was a coach and teacher for 38 years, including 3 years at Palo, 17 years at Center Point and 18 years at Maquoketa Valley in Delhi. An extremely hardworking man, he also maintained a small farm for many years while teaching and coaching. Max was awarded numerous coaching awards in his career including National Coach of the Year for Region 6 in 1990. After retiring in 1991, Max and Vonda escaped the cold months of Iowa to enjoy the warmth of central Florida. In early retirement they enjoyed traveling the U.S. in their RV. Max had a passion for his children and grandchildren, teaching them how to ski, fish and throw a ball. He could build the perfect bonfire for the best s’mores and popped the most delicious popcorn. He loved showing family around Florida when they vacationed there, often accompanying them to the best sights and various amusement parks. Max loved fishing and was a devout sports enthusiast. He took pride in his homes and was often seen tilling the beach, working in the yard, tinkering in the garage and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was always willing to lend a hand and in recent years was a devoted caretaker to his wife, Vonda.
Max is survived by two of his children, Tim and Teri; eight grandchildren, Suzi Albers, Laura Elder, Elizabeth Siegel, Nicki Tyler, Angie Gwilt, Jason Anderson, Allison Anderson and Travis Anderson; and 14 great-grandchildren.
