With her family she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she resided until the death of her parents. At age ten, she returned with her sisters to Dubuque to live with her aunts Nell and Ann Maloy.

Maura attended the Visitation Academy and graduated from Clarke College in 1959.
She later earned a master's degree in journalism from Marquette University.
