Matthew Edward "Matt" Ries
January 16, 1912 — July 21, 2006
Matthew E. Ries, 94, of Manchester, formerly of Ryan, died Thursday evening, July 20, 2006 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a short illness.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2006 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Manchester by Rev. Nick March. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester and one hour before services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Matt was born January 16, 1912 in New Vienna, the son of Tom and Katherine (Konzen) Ries. On November 15, 1939 Matt was united in marriage to Julia Knipper at St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. The couple farmed near Ryan.
Matt was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a director for Mid-America Dairy. He enjoyed playing cards and fishing.
Matt is survived by his wife, Julia Ries of Manchester; twelve children, Sr. Irma Ries P.B.V.M. of Muscatine, Marvin (Karen) Ries of Ryan, Donna (Joe) Smith of Hopkinton, Jim (Pat) Ries of Monticello, Ken (Karen) Ries of Ryan, Jerome (Mary Kay) Ries of Ryan, Jon (Becky) Ries of Manchester, Kevin (Colleen) Ries of Ryan, Julie (Kevin) Miller of Monticello, Kathy (Rick) Davis of Marion, Carla (Garry) Zumbach of Monticello and Janella (Mick) Neverman of Manchester; a son-in-law, Glen Paulsen of Kimberling City, MO; 49 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Kronlage of Monticello; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Olberding of Dyersville and Esther Ries of Greeley.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary Paulsen; a granddaughter, Sandy Ries; a sister, Leonetta Pitz; and three brothers, Joe, Elmer and Don Ries.
