Matthew M. “Matt” Marx, 69, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service 11 a.m. Friday, March 3, 2023, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids with the visitation to begin one hour prior. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at a later date.
Matt was born September 28, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert and Adeline (Landgren) Marx. He graduated from Washington High School in 1971. Matt served his country honorably in the United States Navy as a Seabee, Naval Construction Force (NCF). After serving in the Navy, Matt returned to his hometown of Cedar Rapids with his former wife, Becky Marx. Matt made a life for himself, had the privilege of being father to three wonderful children (Corey, Riley, and McCaela), and was a steady influence to Rosie, who joined the family and he treated as one of his own children.
Matt started his career at Square D in 1971, where he remained for 45 years. He retired as a millwright, which was the epitome of who Matt was. He was a member of the Machinist Local 831. Matt enjoyed his time at Bushwood where he would connect with his retired friends to share stories over breakfast. In Matt’s free time he enjoyed the outdoors, camping, playing sports, music, drinking craft beer, joining his family for racing, and holding great conversations. He was known as a handyman and was never presented with a problem he couldn’t solve. Matt could also be counted on to fix anything and to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
All of Matt’s passions are what would connect him with his wife, Kay. On January 8, 2023, after over a decade building a life together, Matt and Kay Siela were united in marriage. Matt was devoted to his family and grandchildren, and to all those who crossed his path. He loved spending time with his dogs, Big Al, Gladys, and the late Rowdy, and taking them for rides. The memories of Matt will be treasured by all those who knew him, and he will be dearly missed for all of time.
Survivors include his wife, Kay of Cedar Rapids; his children, Corey Marx of Cedar Rapids, Riley (Adam) Burns of North Carolina, McCaela Marx (fiancé Ashton Wilkins) of Cedar Rapids, Rosie (Bryan) Cutter of Cedar Rapids; Kay’s children: Zak (Diana) Siela of Cedar Falls, Noah (Cass) Siela of Columbia, Missouri, Frances (Kyle) Moehnke, Abe (Jamie) Siela, and John Siela, all of Cedar Rapids.
