Mary Ann Wright-Butts, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, March 17, 2023, at Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, Iowa. Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2023, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church at 1340 3rd Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids with visitation just prior to the service. Rev. Julie Wehner will officiate. Inurnment: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Columbarium, Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids assisted the family.
Mary was born November 23, 1940, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Leander and Gertrude (Berns) Goebel. Mary graduated in 1958 from Manchester High School, Manchester, Iowa. She was a cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society. Mary was the homecoming queen in 1958, the Dyersville Baseball Queen in 1959, and the Veterans Ball Queen in 1959. Mary graduated from Dubuque Beauty Academy in 1959 and worked as a hairstylist for a couple years. Mary was united in marriage to Richard Overmann on June 25, 1960, and from that marriage, they had two daughters: Deborah and Susan. Mary and Richard later divorced. In 1976, she married Orville Wright. The couple later divorced. She married Gary Butts on July 17, 1986, in Cedar Rapids. Mary worked for Hy-Vee as a salesclerk. She was an excellent cook, gardener, seamstress, and homemaker in her younger years. She loved playing Bingo, cards, and winning at Euchre. She was member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
Mary will be remembered for her beautiful smile and dimples. Often it was said, "Mary was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside”. We will miss you, Mary. Until we meet again in eternal life, your loving family.
Survivors include her daughters, Deb (Jeff) Schebler of Solon, Iowa, and Susan (Steve) Webb of Apple Valley, Minnesota; grandchildren, Michelle Schebler, Scott Schebler, Kyle (Kristen) Webb, Natalie (Andy) Timm, and Trenton Webb (fiancée, Amber Johnson); great-grandchildren, Hayley Webb and Evelynn Timm; siblings, Janet (Jerry) Happel of Guttenberg, Carolyn Sandman of Dubuque, Iowa, and Edward (Kathy) Goebel of Fairfax, Iowa; and sisters-in-law, Barb Goebel and Janet (Goebel) Wallenberg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gary Butts; brothers, James, Melvin, and infant Ronald Goebel; and brother-in-law, Paul Sandman.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Dikkers, Dr. Hoffman, the staff at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Guttenberg Care Center as well as St. Croix Hospice, Strawberry Point, Iowa, and Father Marvin Bries of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Your kind words of support and sympathy meant a lot to our family. Thank you to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg for the quilt and thank you to hospice for the basket of goodies. We greatly appreciate it.
