Mary was born March 11, 1918 to Charles and Nancy McDermott. She married Leland Spurgeon on January 25, 1939. She and her husband lived in Canton until 1966 when they moved to Washington, Iowa. In 1990, Virginia moved to Marion, Iowa, and made her home with Elaine. In 2004, she began spending winters in Texas with Bonnie and Fred. Virginia spent warm sunny days on the patio exchanging greetings with the dog walkers who watched for her and stopped to visit with “Grandma.” She loved all of her birthday parties, especially a large celebration for her 90th. Virginia’s family was her life. She enjoyed visits from her large family of adults, babies and teenagers. Virginia never traveled alone, as her rosary beads went with her everywhere and lulled her to sleep at night.
Virginia was a great cook and enjoyed fixing special dinners. She could plan for five yet serve 15 with ease. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be greatly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in Virginia’s memory.
