Mary F. Soens, 93, of Ryan, formerly of Iowa City, died Friday morning, December 5, 2003, at her son?s home in Dubuque, after a short illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, December 9, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan, with Bishop Lawrence Soens officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 8, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Manchester and one-half hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church. There will be a rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a prayer vigil service at 5:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Mary Frances (Organ) Soens was born on June 4, 1910 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Bridget (Delaney) Organ. She attended grade school in Marengo and graduated from Iowa City high school in 1928. On May 10, 1932, Mary was united in marriage to Julius Soens in Iowa City. The couple lived in Iowa City where she worked for the University of Iowa in the Educational Department. In 1947, they moved to Ryan to run the Ryan Locker. Mary began bookkeeping at the Ryan Creamery in 1949. Jule died in 1983. Mary moved to Dubuque to live with her son and daughter-in-law in December, 2002.
Mary was an active member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan, where she had been a member since 1947. She was a member of the Little Flower study club. She was a volunteer for many organizations. Mary loved to play cards with her friends and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by one son and his wife, Richard and Bea Soens of Dubuque; three grandchildren, Jayne (Chuck) DeBrular of Phoenix, AZ, Mike Soens of Phoenix, AZ, and Tom Soens of Delhi; and three great-grandchildren, Brady & Cody DeBrular and Tyler Soens.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jule; and three brothers, Edward, Sylvester, and John Organ.
