Mary A. Kofron, 88, of the Promise House, Hiawatha, died Monday August 7, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 11, 2006, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Thomas McDermott. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a Rosary at 5 p.m and a Vigil Service at 6 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial: St. John?s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn (Gary) Myers of Cedar Rapids and Joyce (David) Gerleman of Swisher; three grandchildren, Rodney (Melinda) Myers, Jonathan (Renae) Myers and Gina Gerleman; three great grandchildren, Lane, Gabrielle and Brenna; numerous nieces and nephews; and her little dog, Molly..
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; and three brothers, Anthony Roman, Frank Roman and Jerry Roman.
Mary was born November 26, 1917, in Bystrice, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Krejci) Roman. With the death of her mother, she needed to stay home and take care of her younger brothers. She always wanted to graduate from high school so enrolled in the Kirkwood program and received her GED on May 16, 1984. On May 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to George A. Kofron at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. George died in 1971. She retired after 39 years from Wilson Packing Company where she worked in production. Mary was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church and was an avid gardener, liked to walk, fish in Minnesota with her husband George, read and was a world traveler, traveling to Australia and New Zealand, Egypt, Czechoslovakia, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Spain, Canada, Alaska, Russia, China, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Italy, and Greece.
