Mary Katharine Sopher, 95, a resident of Kingston Hill in Cedar Rapids, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her sons, Foster Sopher of Seattle Washington, and Charles (Lorna) Sopher of Mound View, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Kelly, Megan (Nick) Duffy, Katherine, Molly, Andrew and Shannon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jay.
Mary Kay was born January 9, 1914, in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Charles and Lou (Purcell) Foster. She attended Wall Lake High School and graduated with the Class of 1933. She was a baby sitter to Andy Williams when he was young. Mary Kay was married to Jay Rolland Sopher on December 14, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She was an operating room nurse for 14 years in Lake City and volunteered with her husband at the VA hospital in Iowa City for over 15 years; they were the first couple ever nominated for TV9’s “9 Who Care”. She was also a longtime member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Services: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids and also 1/2 hour prior to service at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery.
