Mary Jane McDaniel, 100, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, with Pastor Carol Sundberg officiating; a visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial to follow at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Mary Jane McDaniel was born September 16, 1922, in Faribault, Minnesota, the daughter of Ezra and Alyce Lenway. The family moved to Cedar Rapids when Mary Jane was four where her father worked for the Rock Island Railroad. Mary Jane graduated from Roosevelt High School. She married Dale McDaniel in 1941; they had five children: Clifford (Julia) McDaniel, James (Barbara) McDaniel, Jerri Jean (Michael) Hughes, Cathy (Steven) Griffin and William McDaniel. The couple had 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mary Jane was a homemaker who enjoyed roller skating, square dancing, musicals, game shows, knitting, sewing and was an avid reader. Her greatest joy in life was loving and caring for her family. In her last years, she especially enjoyed the hugs and smiles from her great grandchildren, who affectionately called her “GiGi”.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale McDaniel; son, Clifford McDaniel; son-in-law, Steven Griffin; her brothers, Boyd, Fred and Alvin Lenway; and her sister, Phyllis Wilson.
