Mary Katherine Hayzlett, 90, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Shenandoah, Iowa, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at Keystone Cedars, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010 at First Baptist Church, Shenandoah, Iowa, by Rev. Gary Fuller. The family will greet friends from 5 – 8 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2010, at Hackett Livingston Funeral Home, Shenandoah. Private family graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion.
Survivors include her daughters, Kay (Robert) Nelson and Mary Beth (Craig) Applefield; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, and Nick; 4 great-grandchildren, Zackary, Joshua, Alexis, and Elizabeth.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Alice Null; her 1st husband, Willard Hale; her 2nd husband, Kenneth Hayzlett; and 1 brother, Hubert Null.
Katherine was born April 29, 1919, the daughter of Howard and Irene (Burks) Null, in Pickering, Missouri. She married Willard Hale in 1940. In 1949, she married Kenneth Hayzlett. Katherine received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri. She was a valued member of the teaching staff at the Shenandoah Community Schools for 23 years. Katherine was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah, and most recently, the First Baptist Church/Church of the Bretheren in Cedar Rapids. She was a volunteer at the Shenandoah Hospital, and Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids. Katherine was a member of the Book Club at Keystone Cedars and enjoyed reading, quilting, cross stitch and traveling.
