Mary Edith Ferris, 87, a resident of Linn Manor Care Center, formerly of Des Moines, died Saturday, December 4, 2004, at the care center, following a brief illness. Services: 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, conducted by Alan Christopherson. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Survivors include her children, Jean (Helmut) Zimmermann of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, James (Myrna) Ferris of Cedar Rapids, Patricia (John) Van Essen of Lincoln, Nebraska, and John (Ruth) Ferris of Dunkerton; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Rockhold of Baldwin City, Kansas; and three sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; two brothers; four sisters; and a grandson, Daniel Van Essen.

Mary was born in rural Baldwin City, Kansas, on December 1, 1917, the youngest of eight children to James J. and Clara E. O?Brien. She graduated from Vinland Rural High School in May of 1935. She worked in Kansas City, Missouri, for several years. Mary was united in marriage to Harry E. Ferris on June 29, 1943, and they lived most of their lives in Des Moines. Together they owned and operated The Lamp Shop in Des Moines for several years before retiring in 1974. She moved to Marion in 2001 and attended the Marion Gospel Hall.
