Mary Anne Earsa, 83, of Fairfax, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Amana, Iowa. Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Hala Cemetery, Fairfax with close family friend, Joe Gerst officiating. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her daughter, Julie Kathryn Earsa Klein of Fairfax; special niece, Kathryn Jones of Williamsburg, Iowa; sister, Betty Lou Karal Clark Upmier of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, Charlie, Kathy, Linda, Nancy, Peggy, Karen, Roger, Danny, Mark, Eric, Nick, Elizabeth and Clint; Cousin, Glendora Simon and family; many friends from Square D and neighborhood friends; her new family friends from Colonial Manor Nursing home; and her pet cats, Kibby, Reggie, Snowpants and of course Dooley, who is watching over Julie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Lillian Karal; husband, John; mother and father-in-law, Charles and Frances Earsa; John’s siblings, Helen Carlson, Anna Hasek and William Earsa; very close family friend and neighbor the last few years, Gary Kloubec; best friend, Ann Harriman many beloved pets; and her special friend, Sophie.
Mary Anne was born on November 16, 1933 in Cedar Rapids, daughter of Rudolph and Lillian (Young) Karal. She graduated from Walford Consolidated School. She grew up in the Depression and spent her evenings listening to the radio and explaining to her family on what was happening with the war. On June 5, 1951, John Edward Earsa and Mary Anne were united in marriage. She farmed with her husband, while also being a caring mother to Julie and working at Square D. She enjoyed sewing and made every piece of clothing she wore. She enjoyed the outdoors whether it be bird watching, watching deer grazing in the field or playing with their new babies, tending to her vegetable and flower gardens or just waving at passing neighbors. Mary Anne was an avid reader and enjoyed reading mysteries. Her favorite authors were Robert Parker, Jonathan Kellerman and Janet Evanovich. Mary Anne and John went on extensive trips to the western states where they enjoyed going on Civil War tours. She especially enjoyed Appomattox Courthouse, where she could sense the souls of the soldiers who were killed. Mary Anne enjoyed listening to many types of music, The Rolling Stones, due to her daughter and many Blues artists. She was thrilled when Julie introduced her to B.B. King, Junior Wells and Lonnie Brooks. Mary Anne told Julie that she was the best daughter that she could ever have asked for and promised that she will always watch over her. Julie could have never ask for a better mother, who was also her life advisor and protector. She was Julie’s greatest love.
