Mary B. Behan, 81, of Masonville, Iowa, died Friday evening at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa, following a short illness.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am on Monday, October 7, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Masonville, with Rev. Ivan Nienhaus officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester. Burial will be in St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery in rural Masonville.
Mary was born on February 8, 1921, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of William & Mary Elizabeth (O?Brien) Behan. She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1939. Mary was a pitcher and played third base for the Rockford Peaches baseball team out of Rockford, Illinois, and Tulsa Magnets during the 1950?s. She later played softball in Manchester, for the Red Birds. Mary operated Behan?s Tap in Masonville, from 1939 to 1960. She then was a dietitian supervisor for the Independence Mental Health Institute, for the next 18 years.
Mary was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville. She was the Grand Marshall for Masonville?s Centennial Celebration in 2001.
Mary is survived by her sisters-in-law, Margaret Behan of Independence and Dorothy Francois and her husband Ray, of Springfield, Missouri, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William & Mary Behan; two sisters, Kathryn Morney and Anna Hayes; and five brothers, Joseph, Bernard, William, Van, and Louis Behan.
