Marvin J. "Marv? Thomsen, 53, of Manchester, Iowa, died Saturday evening, January 18, 2003, at the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa, after a fight with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at the First Lutheran Church, Manchester, with the Rev. Jean Rabary officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Manchester, and for an hour before services on Wednesday at the church. Burial with military rites will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester.

Marv was born June 27, 1949 in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Marvin L. & Buirl C. (Gill) Thomsen. He was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Iowa and later confirmed his faith at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Marv received his education in the West Delaware Schools, graduating in 1967. In 1966, Marv enlisted in the Naval Reserves, later serving in Vietnam as electronic technician on th U.S.S. Paul Revere. Following his discharge in 1969, Marv worked at Rockwell Collins and attended Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, majoring in electronics. He served as an apprentice at Stan?s TV and Repair, and then worked as a television technician in Cedar Rapids and in Manchester. On February 20, 1971, Marv married Kathy Callies and two children were born into this union. The couple later divorced. On May 19, 1990, Marv married Pamela Mesch Freeman and together they had one son. The couple later divorced.

Marv participated in 4-H as a youth, showing calves at the fair earning a blue ribbon. Marv was a talented boxer, receiving many trophies from local competitions. He participated in the Golden Gloves and also boxed while serving in the Navy. Marv also was an avid pool player and was a league player. Marv was very good at mechanics and electronics and was able to fix almost anything. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle.

Marv is survived by his mother, Buirl C. Thomsen of Manchester; his sons, Kevin "Kelly? Thomsen, and wife Debbie, of Pueblo, Colorado, and Kirk Thomsen of Manchester; a daughter, Tracy Madrid, and husband Richie, of Monte Vista, Colorado; and special stepson, Bruce Freeman, and wife Harmony, of Delaware; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren; three sisters, Peggy Wilson and husband Larry of Wrangell, Alaska, Norma Michels and husband Richard of Sequim, Washington, Vicky Murphy and husband Wayne of Port Angeles, Washington and a brother Marc Thomsen and wife Pat of Port Angeles, Washington.

Marv was preceded in death by his father, Marvin L. Thomsen in 1998.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
