Martin O. Hillers, Jr., 83, of Manchester and formerly of Oneida, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, October 16, 2007, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 20, 2007, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Delaware. Visitation from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, and for one hour before services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Pine View Cemetery in Delaware.

Martin was born on June 10, 1924, in Delaware, Iowa, the son of Martin F. & Lorna M. [Mussehl] Hillers. He attended school in Delaware then graduated from Oneida High School in 1942. On March 7, 1945, Martin was united in marriage to Lillian G. Parker at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Delaware. The couple worked on a farm near Colesburg until moving to a farm north of Earlville in 1947. They moved to their farm near Oneida in 1949 where they farmed for 33 years, sold DeKalb seed corn, and raised Duroc hogs. The couple moved to Manchester in 1982. Martin then sold insurance for Aflac Insurance Company.

Martin was a life-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Delaware, where he served on various boards. Martin pitched baseball for various teams for 35 years in the Delaware County Baseball League. He was a 4-H leader and was a member of the Delaware County Pork Producers. Martin served on the Oneida School Board; was an original member of the Maquoketa Valley School Board; and served over 30 years on the German Mutual Insurance Board. Martin was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Martin is survived by his wife, Lillian Hillers of Manchester; three sons, Larry [Sue] Hillers of Delhi and Steven [Joan] Hillers and Randy [Judy] Hillers, all of Manchester; two daughters, Diana [Jerry] Bodensteiner of Cedar Rapids and Carolyn [Dan] Greenfield of Scotch Grove; thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marlene Reth of Manchester and Marilyn [Roger] Marvel of Glenwood.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Martin F. & Lorna M. Hillers two brothers, Walter and Raymond Hillers; and two infant sisters and one infant brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be directed to either St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Delaware or Maquoketa Valley Dollars for Scholars.
