Marlyn D. Benish, 70, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a courageous battle with cancer. A Masonic Service will begin at 5:00 p.m., Sunday March 26, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, in Marion. Visitation will follow until 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, at Springville Presbyterian Church, Springville, conducted by Pastor David Snyder. Burial: Springville Cemetery, Springville.

Marlyn was born June 2, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, to Elmer L. and Gladys (Stepanek) Benish. On June 24, 1978, he was united in marriage to Mickie Ewart.

Marlyn was a farmer and was employed at Happels, Moorman Equipment and retired in 2011 as Parts Manager for James W. Bell Company. He enjoyed working on small engines. Marlyn also enjoyed working the land, gardening, bowling, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs, playing with his cat Liz, but most of all spending time with his family.

Marlyn was a member of the Springville Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee. He was a Past Master of the Springville Masonic Lodge No. 139 A.F. & A.M., a Past Patron of Love Chapter No. 407 OES, a member of the Springville American Legion Post #331 and Lodge Prokop Velky No. 137. He was also a 4-H leader for 43 years and served on the Youth {Programs Council and the Linn County Extension Board.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mickie Benish; daughter, Amy (Justin) Hornett; son, Brian (Katie) Benish; grandchildren, Jaxson and Kaylee Hornett, Logan Benish and twin grandsons due in May; sisters, Janice Howell and Janelle Benish; brother, Darrell (Janet) Benish; brother-in-law, Will (Cookie Vanous) Ewart; sister-in-law, Paula (Larry) Bachman; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Alan; and brother-in-law, James Howell.

Our family would like to thank the St. Luke’s 5th floor nursing staff, Dr. Jason M. Cogdill, Dr. Deborah W. Wilbur, Dr. Mary L. Hlavin and Dr. Kirk W. Kilburg for the care given to Marlyn.
