Marjorie “Marj” Jane Meeker, 97, of Central City, Iowa, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. A Mass of Chrisitan Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Central City, where an additional visitation will start at 10 a.m. until the Mass time. Reverend Sean Smith will officiate. Cremation will follow the Mass and a Private Committal Service will take place at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa.
Marj was born on September 29, 1926, in Waverly, the daughter of Charles and Mable (Reasoner) Barber. She was a graduate of Waverly High School and went on to work in retail, and later at Mason City High School and American Cancer Society, also of Mason City. On September 21, 1946, Marj was united in marriage to William “Bill” James Meeker Sr. in Waverly. Together they had four children. Marj and Bill loved traveling in their motor home and thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Europe. Marj was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Waverly and a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Central City. She loved to play cards with her family and friends and wintering in Arizona. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Marj is survived and lovingly remembered by her four children, William (Arlys) Meeker Jr. of Savage, Minnesota, Linda (Ken) Osterholz of Cumming, Iowa, Elizabeth Long (Al Haley) of Central City, and Charles (Nanette) Meeker of Central City; six grandchildren, Matt (Edna May) Meeker, Gretchen (Dan) Sousek, Colby (Tara) Wheeler, Amy (Ryan) DeCook, William (Erin) Meeker, and Ellen (Doug) Land; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Miller of Bull Shoals, Arkansas; and one sister-in-law, Maxine Barber of Waverly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Meeker Sr.; grandson, Sam Osterholz; two sisters, Margaret Rechkemmer and Mary Louise Polesky; and brother, Hubert Barber.
