Marion William “Bill” Long, 81, a resident of Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Marion, died Thursday, February 17, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2011, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Family will greet friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Sharon Long of Marion; three sons, Curt (Tracey) Long of Dubuque, Brian (Joy) Long and Brent (Bev) Long, both of Robins; 10 grandchildren, Ben (Rebecca), Jameson, Nick, Ian, Cam, Meghann, Gracie, Mitch, Allison, and Riley; and his siblings, Mavis Spry, Max Long, Elizabeth Bentrott, Fonda Toms, Patricia Wachal, Jackie Riegert, and Monty Long.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Gale Long and Carol Nerone.
Bill was born February 21, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Bruce and Velma (Prosser) Long. He was raised in Clarence and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids. On July 10, 1954, Bill was united in marriage to Sharon Ann Williams in Cedar Rapids. Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Wilson Meat Packing Plant (Farmstead) for nearly 30 years, then as a bailiff at the Linn County Courthouse for 15 years. Bill was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and the Knights of Columbus #5390 of Marion.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bill’s memory.
