Marie Schmitz, 93, of Walker, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, in West Village Care Center, Independence. Funeral Mass: 10:30 Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Walker, by Rev. Ardel Barta. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m., Friday March 18th, at the parish hall where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Walker. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Walker.
Survivors include her sisters, Frances Weber and Eileen Knight both of Walker; and many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ted, John and Edward; and one sister, Adeline Kress.
Born June 1, 1917, in Walker, Iowa, Marie was the daughter of Charles and Mary (Michael) Schmitz. She was a rural school teacher for six years before moving to Seattle where she worked for Boeing. Later she returned to Cedar Rapids and worked for Rockwell for over 30 years.
She was a Catholic Daughter, an accomplished seamstress, and volunteered for many organizations. She enjoyed traveling and considered her nieces and nephews her family.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
