Marie Marling, 88, a resident of West Village Care Center, Independence, formerly of the Quasqueton area, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, in the care center, following a short illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at the Union Church, Quasqueton, by the Rev. Paul Drake. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Walker. Burial: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Walker Cemetery.

Survivors include three nieces and two nephews; Bernice Bellach, Norman Wachal, both of Walker; LaVern Wachal of Fairbank, Carol Mallory of Georgia and Violet Day of Ohio; and numerous relatives, friends and former students.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen; two brothers, Melvin and Alfred Helbig; a sister, May Wachal; and two nephews, Marvin and Erwin Wachal.

Marie was born May 9, 1914, the daughter of Walter and Tena (Hamilton) Helbig, near Walker, Iowa. She graduated from Walker High School, received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher?s College and received her B. A. degree from Upper Iowa College. Marie was united in marriage to Glen Marling in Chicago, Illinois. He died in September of 1985. For over 40 years, Marie was a teacher and taught in rural schools, including Evergreen Oak, Belle Prairie and South Cono, 5th grade at Quasqueton Schools and retired from East Buchanan Elementary Schools in 1979.
