Marie J. Milota Koutny, 95, of ManorCare, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the care center, following a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday March 9, 2009 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Bob Dagit. The family will greet friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009. Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her daughter, Lois ( Gaylon ) Hynek of Ely, IA; seven grandchildren, Susan (Bruce) Voll, E. Amhurst, New York, Lori Bratton, Hamilton, Ohio; James (Lisa) Vecerka, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mary Dufner, Hopkins, Minnesota.; Todd Koutny, Cedar Rapids; Lance (Maria) Koutny, Methuen, Massachusetts.; Valerie Koutny, Eldridge, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Andrew & Carly Bratton, Dana & Allison Voll, Jill & Matthew Dufner, and Emma Koutny; and dear friend, Gloria Sears, her children and grandchildren who adopted Marie as Grandma; and many nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Rose Milota; her husband, Milo: brothers, Robert & Rudolph Milota; sisters, Frances Winchester and Josephine Fajmon; and a son, Donald.
Marie was born the daughter of Frank E and Mamie (Kouba) Milota on July 22, 1913, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended Fillmore, Roosevelt and graduated from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids in January 1932. On October 22, 1933, she was united in marriage to Milo W. Koutny at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Marie was employed in the banquet departments of Roosevelt and Montrose Hotels, Elmcrest and Cedar Rapids Country Clubs, F. W. Woolworth and Maney Labs.
Marie was active in PTA, serving as President and Vice-President and an Assistant Leader for Blue Birds and Campfire girls. She learned to weave in the 1940’s and enjoyed making rugs, wall hangings and placemats. Marie won many ribbons at the Iowa State Fair and the All Iowa Fair for her weaving. In 1973, she and Milo retired and moved to Sanibel, Florida, where she loved shelling and making crafts and gifts for the shops in Sanibel and Captiva. Marie also sold her rugs and placemats in the shops in Florida. She enjoyed TV game shows, crossword puzzles, weaving, shellcraft, bingo and loved to travel. Marie was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
The family would like to thank the employees of ManorCare and Amenity Hospice for the loving care and support given to Marie during her recent illness.
A memorial fund has been established in memory of Marie.
