Marie Elinor Karal, 82, of Fairfax, Iowa, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Heritage Nursing & Rehab Center, Cedar Rapids, from complications of Pick’s Disease, a type of dementia. Services: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Fairfax. Friends may call from 3 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 31, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where there will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Burial: St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fairfax.
Marie is survived by her husband, Frank; son Mike (Dianne) Karal of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Suellen (Jim) Flynn of Hiawatha, Karen (Jim) Colbert of Ames and Beth (Brad) Hamilton of Fairfax; six grandchildren, Jamie Colbert, Mikki Colbert, Kallie Hamilton, Chris Flynn, Joseph Hamilton and Danielle Hamilton; two brothers, Dave (Mary) Neuhaus and Joe (Cynthia) Neuhaus of Fairfax; two sisters, Patty Flaherty of Woodland Hills, California and Ann (David) Thuerauf of Mount Vernon; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, John “Jack” Neuhaus and Theodore “Tod” Neuhaus.
Marie was born in Davenport, Iowa, to Theodore and Ellen Logan Neuhaus on December 26, 1925. She attended St. Patrick’s grade school in Fairfax and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids. She lived in Fairfax most of her life. She married Franklin J. Karal on October 16, 1947.
Marie, also known as “Wee”, was a loving wife, caring mother, devoted daughter, loyal sister, trusted friend and doting grandmother. She was primarily a homemaker, but she also did some bookkeeping for her husband’s gas station business, Frank’s Apco Service. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Fairfax and belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society for many years. Marie dedicated herself to the people she loved. She enjoyed cooking and hosting family gatherings. It was rare that anyone left her house feeling hungry. She was always ready to listen and her laugh was contagious. Her kindness and compassion will be remembered by all who knew her.
