Marianne Klinsky

Marianne Trejtnar Klinsky, age 90, died in Des Moines, Iowa. A visitation and service of remembrance will be held at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames on Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 from 5 to 7pm. A service, followed by burial at Czech National Cemetery, will be held at 1 pm, Thursday September 26, 2013 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.
Marianne was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, January 6, 1923, to Hermina and Joseph Trejtnar. She received a BS in Home Economics Education from Iowa State University in 1944 and an MS in Related Art in 1970. She married Joseph W. Klinsky in 1943 and they enjoyed 63 and ½ years together. Marianne worked as a draftsman for Goodyear Corp in Akron, Ohio, for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, and for the USDA in Ames. She also taught Home Economics for many years in Iowa City, Iowa.
Three of Marianne’s abiding joys were gardening (especially roses), textiles, and her community. Marianne inherited her love of roses from her mother and she and Joe raised a large rose garden. In 2008, she was designated Master Rosarian and Outstanding Consulting Rosarian by the American Rose Society. She was also awarded the Award of Merit and the Honor Award from the Iowa State Horticulture Society in recognition of her horticultural volunteer work. She was a member of the Ames Garden Club, Master Gardeners, the Arboretum, and volunteered at Reiman Gardens.
Marianne was also a spinner and weaver. She taught weaving at the Octagon, exhibited at Iowa Galleries, and wove fabrics for household use, garments, and church banners. Several of her pieces are in the Iowa State University Textile Museum. She had chaired the State Chapter of Iowa Federation of Weavers and Spinners, served as second vice president on the administrative board of the Hand Weavers Guild of America and was a member of the Ames Weavers and Spinners, and Cyclone Button Club.
Her community was always important to Marianne. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ames, the Iowa State University Women’s Club, and had volunteered for the Brunnier Museum, Mary Greeley Hospital, Heartland Senior Center, and the Ames Community Thrift Shop. She was also very active in the Green Hills community, served on a variety of committees, and deeply valued the connections she made there.
Marianne’s spirit, humor, curiosity, and generosity will be deeply missed by her friends and family. Marianne is survived by her son, J Dennis of Clarksburg, Ontario, granddaughter, Sonja Klinsky of Tempe, Arizona, and grandson, Aaron Klinsky of Toronto; son, Ronald Gary and his partner Pamela Hegerfeld of Spencer, Iowa; and her sister, Ellen Skripsky of Cedar Rapids.
Marianne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph; her two daughters, Pamela Sue and Janice Ellen; her daughter-in-law Rose; and her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, or the First United Methodist Church in Ames.
