Marcella was born March 18, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William Frank and Tillie Ann (Cabalka) Tomash. Marcella graduated from Wilson School. She married Robert Sumner in the St. Ludmila’s rectory by Monsignor Francis Hruby on February 20, 1949. She was baptized Catholic in 1956 by Father Frana. She has been a member of St. Ludmila’s Church for 53 years. Marcella was employed at Square D Company for 30 years and a member of the Machines Union for nearly 45 years. Marcella was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her life revolved around her family. Marcella has made with love, full size quilts for her daughters and grandchildren. She has crocheted dozens of baby blankets for all of her great-grandchildren. She has crocheted countless beautiful crosses that she gave away to everyone she met. They were given to RCIA Candidates, used in the work of Pro-life Ministry and given to newly baptized babies. She loved to bake, go fishing, and have her family over when she was able. She was very devoted to her faith. It was her faith and multiple rosaries she prayed each day that helped her through her days. She lived her last days surrounded by her loving family who will greatly miss her. For those who were blessed to know her, she will live on forever with our memories. Rest well our sweet angel.
Memorials may be directed to St. Ludmila Catholic Church, in Marcella’s memory.
