Marcella A. Goedken, age 100, died January 28, 2009 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, following a short illness.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester by Rev. John Flaherty. Family will greet friends from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 30 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester where there will be a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation one hour before services Saturday at the church with a 10:00 a.m. Rosary Service. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.
Marcella was born September 2, 1908 in Luxemburg, Iowa, the daughter of John B. and Mary (Pasker) Maiers. She received her education at Holy Trinity School in Luxemburg. On October 9, 1929, Marcella was united in marriage to Gregor A. Goedken of Petersburg in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg. The couple farmed in the Dyersville area for a short time before moving to Manchester. They farmed east of Manchester prior to retiring. Gregor died May 27, 1975.
Marcella was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of St. Anne’s Study Club and Senior Citizens Club when she was active. She enjoyed her family and friends, crafting and tending to her flower garden.
Marcella is survived by one daughter, Vera Goedken of Manchester; one son, Don Goedken of St. Paul, Minnesota; two granddaughters, Andrea (Jason) Geer and Marisa (Michael) Arlt both of St. Paul; two grandsons, Michael (Meagan) Goedken of St. Paul and Thomas Goedken of Rochester, Minnesota; a great-granddaughter, Madeleine Geer and a great-grandson, Samuel Geer of St. Paul; one sister, Calista Devine of Manchester; a sister-in-law, Mercedes Maiers of Dyersville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents, John B. & Mary Maiers; her husband Gregor A. Goedken; brothers, Edmund, Alphonse, Nathan and Ambrose Maiers; and sisters, Eleanor Gaul, Anastasia Helle, and Malinda Wiskus.
