Gene was born July 20, 1936, the son of Leo A. and Madaline (Woodward) Lala Sr., in rural Center Point. On December 29, 1959, he married Caroline Coberly in Cedar Rapids. Gene loved farming, hunting and fishing of all kinds, tractor pulls, and snowmobile races. Gene worked as a farmer and was a semi truck driver for Loftus Distribution and also worked for Iowa Manufacturing, Greiner Well Service and was a seed dealer for McCurdy?s. Gene served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and continued with the Army Reserves. He was a member of the Lions Club, Jaycee?s, National Tractor Pulls Association, National Rifles Association and a member of Amway, Inc.

Gene was a loving and devoted husband and was "Dad? to more than just the family. Some of his nicknames were "Babe?, "Gene O?, "Pappa?, "Tubby?, and "The Barron?. His famous saying was (my 2 cents worth) and it was always listened to. Gene loved his family, friends, and neighbors. His friendship touched a lot of people. He will be missed by "ALL?.
