Lura Mae Usher, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, February 15, 2024, peacefully at her home. A visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Lura was born July 25, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Horace and Helen (Thompkins) Gates. She was the oldest of a family of ten children growing up. Lura graduated from McKinley High School. Lura was united in marriage to Leon Berle Usher on June 6, 1953, in Anamosa, Iowa. She worked briefly for the Cedar Rapids Gazette and PennySaver. Lura loved doing special projects and fishing with her husband, Leon. She adored all of her grandchildren and loved playing all kinds of games with them. She was a great wife and mother as well, devoting lots of time cooking and providing for their needs and wants.
Survivors include her daughters, Janet Huff of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Helen (Bob) Ibsen of Lowden, Iowa; grandchildren, David (Heather) Huff of Lignum, Virginia, Dana (Andrew) Freymark of Marion, Iowa, Brian (Eric) Ibsen-Johnson of Goffstown, New Hampshire, and John (Liz) Ibsen of Lowden, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Austin (Mariann) Huff of Grottoes, Virginia, Kaitlyn Huff of Lignum, Virginia, Nolan Freymark of Knoxville, Iowa, Ashlee Freymark of Marion, Iowa, Jacob Freymark of Marion, Iowa, Connor Ibsen of Lowden, Iowa, and Corinn Ibsen of Lowden, Iowa; and great-great-grandson, Riley Huff of Grottoes, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Berle Usher; mother, Helen Margaret (Thompkins) Gates; father, Horace Sanford Gates II; sister, Mary Louise Clark; and brothers, Horace Sanford Gates III and Donald Lewis Gates.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice or Milestones In Marion.
